Like it or hate it, the calendars control our lives starting from the date of birth throughout our entire life. When the Gregorian calendar, the most widely used calendar in the world was introduced in 1582, there were only a few countries that used it but over time several countries started to accept it and the wave of globalization further made it a common worldwide tool.
Basic and practical function of calendar:
Perhaps the most basic and practical use of the calendar system is to categorize the different days and have information regarding the future dates to enable individuals to plan for the events beforehand. The calendar may be used to determine the days that are civil or religious such as the Christmas day and other social days.
The calendar is also used to mark the beginning and end of the business accounting days, along with their legal implications such as the last days for submission of taxes, the date when the license or contract expires and so on. This tool is also used to keep a schedule of diverse activities such as family commitments, business work, schoolwork, and other tasks.
Some people prefer using multiple calendars to manage the personal and professional activities, so that they can make the best use of time available.
Focus on holidays more than natural time:
Despite of the various practical uses of the calendar to manage our lives competently, it cannot be ruled out that in a way calendars completely control our lives and make us live according to it. The calendar we use is more inclined towards the religious holidays than focusing on the natural time based on earth’s revolution around sun. There’s a materialistic aspect to this because holidays like Christmas, Easter, involves a lot of expenditure due to traditions, exchange of gifts, family holidaying etc, thus bringing huge profits for the businesses.
Need for a realistic calendar!
Calendars without doubt have a key role to play in our lives, to enable us to manage our activities and make the best use of our time, however the calendar the world uses today is more materialistic oriented that being focused on the actual need of humans to keep a track of time and manage things efficiently. It’s time to have a more consciously calendar that will not be influenced by religions or materialistic things, but only focus on the natural flow of time.
